Bookkeeper

SUMMARY

We are a local mental health media and advocacy project www.newyorkcityvoices.org with a small decentralized staff. We need a bookkeeper who will work out our finances using software such as Quickbooks or Quicken. The bookkeeper will be working closely with the Editor in Chief in order to make sure that all financial matters are accounted for and to discuss fees for service.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must have experience with business financial software such as Quickbooks or Quicken
• Must speak English fluently
• Must be detail-oriented, highly organized and a self-starter
• Must be able to work independently, have computer, fax and Internet capabilities
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office is a plus

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Enter financial data into relevant software
• Periodically backup data to disks
• Create financial status reports
• Check in with Editor in Chief as needed
• Offer financial advice

Editors

 SUMMARY

We are a local mental health newspaper www.newyorkcityvoices.org with a small decentralized staff. We need volunteer editors who will edit articles that come in via fax, email and postal mail. The Editor in Chief will provide the necessary training and training materials in order to do the job well.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must possess strong communication skills in English (oral and written)
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word
• Must be able to work independently, have computer with Internet capabilities 

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Read and edit articles in order to help the writer communicate as clearly as possible
• Check in with Editor in Chief with any problems or issues (he is very nice)
• Email edited articles to Editor in Chief

Event Planner

SUMMARY

We are a local mental health media and advocacy project www.newyorkcityvoices.org with a small decentralized staff. We need an event planner who will direct the planning of an annual conference on the arts and an annual fundraising reception. The event planner will be working with the Editor in Chief and one or two board members to plan events that are fun, educational and help to sustain the project. The fee will be negotiated with the Editor in Chief.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must have strong communication skills oral and written in English
• Must be detail-oriented, highly organized and a self-starter
• Must be able to work with a small team and have email and telephone capabilities
• Must be able to get the most from money spent
• Proficiency in helpful computer programs

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Direct event planning that follows budgetary guidelines
• Delegate tasks to team members
• Update Editor in Chief on progress or with problems or concerns

Fundraiser

SUMMARY

We are a local mental health media and advocacy project www.newyorkcityvoices.org with a small decentralized staff. We need a fundraiser who will help to research and write corporate and foundation grants and help to streamline a system for donations and subscriptions. The fundraiser will be working primarily with the Editor in Chief to write proposals and to create funding systems that will sustain the project. The fee will be negotiated with the Editor in Chief.

 QUALIFICATIONS

• Grantwriting and grant researching experience with proven results
• Donations-generating experience with proven results
• Must have strong communication skills oral and written
• Must be detail-oriented, highly organized and a self-starter
• Must have email, fax and telephone capabilities
• Proficiency with relevant computer programs

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Help to raise funds as indicated
• Help to create fundraising systems as indicated

Messenger

 SUMMARY

We are a local mental health newspaper www.newyorkcityvoices.org with a small decentralized staff. We need messengers who will travel throughout New York City, but rarely if ever to the Bronx or Staten Island. All packages are very light. Metrocard and lunch money provided. It could be a gateway to other opportunities within the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be able to navigate NYC by bus and train
• Must speak English
• Must be on time
• Must have a telephone
• Internet and email is a plus

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Pickup packages to and from mostly Brooklyn, Manhattan and Long Island City
• Check in with Editor in Chief with any problems or issues (he is very nice)

Proofreaders

 SUMMARY

We are a local mental health newspaper www.newyorkcityvoices.org with a small decentralized staff. We need volunteer proofreaders who will proofread the first draft of a 24-page, tabloid newspaper. Proofreading consists of checking the draft closely for glaring errors in punctuation, spelling, misplaced pullout-quotes or verticals, pagination, and confirming accurate phone and fax numbers, email and other addresses.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must possess strong communication skills in English (oral and written)
• Must be willing to travel to pickup proofing copy in Brooklyn to either take home or proofread from the home office
• Must have a telephone
• Internet and email a plus

• Proofread first draft in order to help create a wonderful end product

Public Speakers

 SUMMARY

We are a local mental health Media and Advocacy Project www.newyorkcityvoices.org with a small decentralized staff. We need public speakers who are willing to share personal stories about mental illness. Metrocards, lunch and/or small stipends may be available.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be someone who has a mental illness and is willing to be open about it with strangers
• Must travel in New York City
• Must have a telephone
• Email is a plus 

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Speak to students, family members, mental health consumers and professionals about your personal experience with mental illness
• Travel in New York City to the sites where you will be speaking

Sales Assistant

 SUMMARY

We are a local mental health newspaper www.newyorkcityvoices.org with a small decentralized staff. We need a sales assistant who will work on commission from home or anywhere there is access to the necessary equipment (see below). The assistant will be working closely with the Director of sales in order to sell advertising space in the print publications and on the website. In addition, the salesperson will be responsible for selling bulk subscriptions to organizations that serve mental health consumers. It pays a 20% commission for each sale. The better you sell the more money you make. Training is provided.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Must be ok with working with professionals in the mental health field
• Must speak English fluently
• Must be detail-oriented, highly organized and a self-starter
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office
• Must be able to work independently, have computer, fax and Internet capabilities
• Must possess strong communication skills (oral and written)

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Make telephone calls and keep records of calls
• Check in with Advertising Director periodically
• Create and maintain all contacts and sales leads
• Track invoices sent and follow-up to ensure payments have been issued
